Second Republic President, Alhaji Shehu Shagari, is dead. He reportedly died on Friday evening in the Nigerian city of Abuja, aged 93.
Shagari, who served as the first and only President of Nigeria’s Second Republic, died at the National Hospital after a brief illness.
News of the former Nigerian leader’s passage was broken by his grandson Bello via Twitter around 7pm and repeated 20 minutes later via a tweet by Rt. Hon. Aminu Tambuwal, Governor or Shagari’s home state, Sokoto.
Bello Shagari tweeted via (@Belshagy):
“I regret announcing the death of my grandfather, H.E Alhaji Shehu Shagari, who died right now after brief illness at the National hospital, Abuja.”
And Governor Tambuwal via (@AWTambuwal):
“I regret to Announce the death of former President Shehu Shagari who just passed away at National Hospital Abuja. May his Soul Rest in Peace.”
