Revenue Collectors: Council Chairman Denies Involvement.

Enugu East local government chairman, Hon. Alex Ugwu has denied knowing the people behind extortion from motorist conveying perishable goods from northern part of the country to Enugu. (Tomatoes) Perishable Goods Market, Afor Awkunanw at Abakpa – Nike says they are not his staff.

Hon. Ugwu said this when he received in audience the leadership of Enugu Perishable (Tomatoes) Goods Market, Afor Awkunanw led by Hon. Nnaji Raymond Okenwa when paid his a courtesy call in his office.

The council chairman wash off his hands in the matter authorizing the group to arrest any person or persons who are involved in disturbing the vehicles conveying their goods.

” We have not sent anybody for such duty. We don’t know those involved, they are not our staff, so go ahead and arrest any person disguise as staff of the local government”

The chairman revealed that some miscreants may disguise as staff of Enugu East local government to decieve unsuspecting public adding that their staff are issued with identification card for similar duties.

Earlier in his speech, the leader of the group Hon. Okenwa told the chairman their experience with some hoodlums who claim to be staff of the local government requesting for non existent vehicle papers and emblems on Abakpa Nike area of his local government.

Hon. Okenwa said that those boys would impound trucks and other vehicles bringing perishable goods to them for hours not considering the perishable nature of the goods while demanding for financial settlement.

He appealed to the chairman to assist them put a stop to the embarrassing situation and call his staff to order.

In a vote of thanks, the chairman of the group, Alhaji Tijjani Yunusa thanked the chairman for his explanation and advise to arrest whoever is involved in the illegal act saying that such statement shows that he truly ignorant to the activities of the touts.

Present at the meeting includes Saraki Hausa community in the state Alhaji Abubakar Sambo.
